I had no idea in Portland, Maine, the sun rises between 4 and 4:30 and sets after 8:30 p.m. It took a lot of getting used to. Why did Portland have over 15 hours of daylight? "Refraction in the air causes the phenomenon of early sunrise and late dusk."
This week I was reminded that if we take the time to acknowledge the sun rise, we will start our day with a miracle. Job 37: 14, "Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God's wonders." Psalm 19: 1, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
"Back in the days before electricity, a tight-fisted old farmer was taking his hired man to task for carrying a lighted lantern when he went to call on his best girl. The farmer said, 'When I went a-courting’ I never carried one of them things; I always went in the dark.'The hired hand responded, 'yes, and look at what you got!'" Sometimes things in the dark don't look so bad.
When we have light, the darkness flees and we feel more at ease. Isaiah 60: 1, "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you." We can rise and shine because God's light is upon us!
A sunrise brings hope and new beginnings! Luke 1: 78-79, "Because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." Let's let the morning light remind us of our God, Who gives us new beginnings and giving us a new day. A sunrise is to be cherished!
